William Buckland Garden, The Alfred

Designed to the brief of “a garden with no plants”, this communal outdoor oasis for patients and visitors of the Alfred Cancer Treatment Facility, is accessible, spatially efficient and low maintenance. Requiring major excavation, the renewed courtyard draws on natural materials, including ironbark decking and seating, timber pergola, large locally-designed rock fountains, and retention walls constructed of gabion baskets, topped with a selection of robust succulents. Floored with geometrically patterned impact matting for ease and safety, the sunken courtyard also makes use of pre-existing elements, including sandblasted exposed concrete walls and powder coated metal seating.
